ICELANDIC GOURMET FEAST--- You Won't Want To Miss This!

Food... it strikes us with excitement and ignites our mood ALL THE TIME, I guess all Malaysians can definitely relate to this... yeah, we, who hail from a country dubbed as the "Food Paradise" know the best. So my first post about my trip to Iceland, it’s none other than an entry to recommend a good restaurant in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland.

Tapas Barinn
My friends were surveying for the best deal in town. (Flip, flip, flip through the menu!)

The famous Blue Lagoon.
As we arrived in Iceland after visiting the Blue Lagoon (I do hope to share this in future post), we went searching for a good restaurants in town and of course, we did do homework prior to our food hunting and it dawn upon me that in Iceland, Icelandic Gourmet Feast is served in various restaurants for 7990kr (approximately 70 USD) with 7 delicious dishes. We went to a restaurant called Tapas Barinn, located in the city centre at Vesturgotu 3b which serves delightful menu as follows: (A glimpse itself on the menu board could be so tempting…drooling again)

Tapas Barinn, Icelandic Gourmet Feast

  • A shot of infamous Icelandic spirit Brennivin
  • Smoked puffin with blueberry “brennivin” sauce
  • Icelandic sea trout with peppers-salsa
  • Lobster tails baked in garlic
  • Pan-fried blue ling with lobster sauce
  • Grilled Icelandic lamb Samfaina
  • Minke Whale with cranberry sauce
  • White chocolate “Skyr” mousse with passion coulis

Wow again!!!

The interior of the restaurant – well-lit with colouful incandescent lamps.
Let’s me share with you my culinary experience and Hey! Beware of hypoglycemic attack!!!

First up, we were served with home-made bread with hummus and blended olives (sounds Mediterranean much!) and of course the whole gourmet experiences started with a shot of Icelandic spirit. CHEERS!!!

Icelandic Food

Iceland is well endowed with fish trout and of course, the fish quality is one of the best across the globe. The pan-fried cod fish, flanked by a succulent asparagus, deliciously drenched in lobster sauce – one of the best sauces I have ever tasted to the extend that I finished all the sauce in the plate! Not a single drop left!

Icelandic Food

We were served with three lobsters which are almost palm-size, baked in cheese and garlic, garnished by a slice of lemon. Cooked to perfection!!!

Icelandic Food

The grilled Icelandic lamb was a bit disappointing as it was none other than a normal kebab. The Samfaina, something like stew vegetable which was served together with the lamb, was a new try for me.

Icelandic Food

Except Minke whale, all other whale species are declared as protected species to be hunt and consumed in Iceland. It was my first time having whale meat also, and to be frank, I am not really fond of it, as the meat just, again, resembles any mammals, like beef or lamb, just not as pungent as lamb, perhaps. The chef whipped up some pumpkin sauce to go along with the whale meat, instead of cranberry sauce as stated in the menu, but well,  the pumpkin puree sauce was really good too!

Icelandic Food, whale meat

For dessert, we were served with Iceland “Skyr” mousse which tastes like a wonderful piece of ice-cream-cum-cheesecake with a ball of passion fruit sorbet decorated with fruits and berries. Skyr is a traditional Icelandic diary product resembling greek yoghurt. Thumbs up again for the dessert!

Skyr
Skyr
Without a single doubt, it was one of the best gastronomical treats for us in Iceland and it is considered value-for-the-money, taking into account of the high living standards in Iceland with exorbitant food prices everywhere across the country where we were served with such palatable food!

If you happen to come to Iceland, you do not want to miss the famous “Icelandic Gourmet Feast” which I am sure, it serves everyone’s palate!
